First-Hand Pain

Being self-employed or owning a business is one of the more difficult endeavors that people are eager to rush into — the other two on the list are marriage and having children. I say it a lot... you don't own the business, the business owns you. It takes a great deal of effort and time to keep clients and the government happy — and neither make it easy. If you are looking for freedom and easy money, don't start a business.

Time goes by entirely too fast. Ong and I have been in business for over 5 years; and have been going full-steam with it for over 2 years. What is full-steam? 60 plus hours per week and a most weekend... no vacations that didn't have business interests attached.

Like any job, we have days that we hate it, but most the time we love what we do. We love the work — even though it is hard. In particular, I really enjoy working directly with clients to solve difficult problems; I get to first-hand make a difference.

The past few weeks have been difficult. We are at a growing point in our business... and growing pains hurt. Honestly and sadly, I think the growing pains will continue until the end of the year. There is a lot do for this growth phase... all in addition to our daily workload. This translates into putting extra hours in on top of our extra hours.

I have high hopes for the next phase of our business life; and I think it is going to be worth more than all the effort and pain to get it there.
