CMS Showdown

Been looking heavily into various CMS solutions... and today I installed my top 3 picks — Drupal, Joomla and Expression Engine. Currently, I would say Joomla is in the lead with Expression Engine closely behind. Drupal seems to be a bit rough around the edges and is not winning any points there. The control panel on Joomla is miles ahead of the closest competitor... which is actually putting it in the lead.

All of the solutions fall massively short in the documentation department. Simple tutorials and instructions are difficult to find... and most are just poorly done. Expression Engine comes the closest to having this right, but my expectation is higher for them.

Finding themes is a joke... WordPress seems to be the only ones that have figured this out. The rest have a lot of learning to do. It is to your benefit to support the theme community... lame themes make your CMS look lame.

These are just my first impressions. I've spend less than an hour with each... so I reserve the right to change my mind.

Hi Chris, my favourite by far is Plone which runs on top of the Zope 2 application server. You can check it out here: http://plone.org/. The documentation is amazing, because it has the support of the community behind Zope, which is just massive. There are in depth walkthroughs on everything, including customising the look and feel, and finding pre-made themes which can be installed in minutes.
