Building a Better Bomb

Stayed in the office entire too long last night to get a website launched for a client. It just reaffirms that the graphic design business is a service business — not an art business. There is rarely a deadline to finish art, but there is always a deadline to complete design. Given my need to accomplish things, this fits in pretty well with my personality... however, it can and does get old. More than the deadlines, it is the lack of understanding.

Quite often, I feel like clients don't understand what we do... and even more often, I feel like they don't understand what they are asking for. All too often, they want something cheap, fast and complicated... all while not giving enough details. While I feel pressured and want to put the blame on the client, the truth is that I'm the professional and I'm the one that should know. So between battling deadlines and dodging burn-out, I'm making a huge effort to educate myself about how to educate clients; and create tools and processes to help both sides.

Time to improve the service.
