The AOL Years

A friend and I went out for cigars and wine last night and had an interesting conversation that started with my branding problem. We noted that we were both first wave internet users and most likely members of the first online communities. This has an interesting effect on our view of the web because we transitioned from an "AOL Screenname" view of using the internet. From this angle, we were both birthed into the building of persona's as the core of our online identities. This is a strong contrast of the web today where users join as real people who's online identity mirrors their real identity. Even if that is not a new user's intent, their persona and real identity is often and quickly merged thanks to search engines and social networks.
