Logical Dilemma
It appears that I will be changing majors in the near future — all logic simply points that way.
Here are the facts. A degree in advertising is 50 units, while a degree in graphic design is 70 units. Classes in the art department are 6 hours per week, while classes in the communication department are only 3 hours per week — both are 3 units.
My goal is to teach university-level graphic design. This requires an MFA in graphic design. To get into the MFA program, an under-graduate degree is required along with a above average portfolio of graphic design work.
The dilemma is my schedule. I'm self-employed and can only afford a small amount of time away from the office. Within the art department, I have only been able to take a single class per semester. If you do the math, you will see that this is 12 years in the art department... just for my under-graduate degree.
With the shorter classes in the communications department, I will be able to take 2 classes for every one that I would be able to take in the art department. This cuts my under-graduate degree down to 4 years — a vast improvement.
The disadvantage that I face is not having built relationship with professors in the art department and building my portfolio under their guidance. As with most graduate-degree programs, there is an application process; thus, there is no guarantee that I will get into the MFA program. Every advantage will help.
Logically, it is clear what I should do. I should take the communications route, build a great portfolio, and take my chances with applying for the MFA. However, I am still torn as to what to do. If I do not get into the MFA program, getting the under-graduate degree becomes the end and not a step to my goal.
Seeking wisdom.

BUT...you will have a degree. It is a tough call, but it is touch to commit to 12 years for an undergrad. Ick.
I really doubt that you could pigeon hole yourself into not being able to get to where you want to go - no matter the degree.
I would say - go with the communications degree and just try to keep yourself updated in the arts field by taking extra arts classes whenever you have the chance in your schedule. Keep close to the professors in the arts department by asking them questions and I'm sure you'll have no problem.
Besides... undergrad degrees are just the practice level. ;)
I'd like to agree, go for the degree in less time.
I think I am on-board w/the Comm degree.
The more I think about it, the BFA in Graphic Design would just be insane.
