What I Know

I know that 2003 is going to be the best year of my life thus far. It is going to be my first full year married to a fantastic woman. I am going back to school... which may not sound fun, but it is what I really want to be doing. I have a new job... and I will be making more money than I have ever made. I have a better idea of who I am and what I want to do than I ever have... and will be pushing forward with my goals. This is all I know about 2003. And if everything else goes to crap... it will still be the best year yet.

Still Alive

I am still alive. Christmas was great. I am just relaxing until the new year rolls in.

The Orange Crush Waltz

Another zero traffic day. I am beginning to like Christmas.

The day before Christmas... eek. I still have a bit of shopping to do. No more presents... just some stocking stuffers. I have yet to wrap a thing, so I will be doing that tonight as well.

I am very happy about staying at home for Christmas. I have always wanted to have a Christmas with just me and my wife... and I always joked about a having a dog... so I have one of those as well (be careful what you joke/wish). I am only missing two things from my list for a perfect Christmas: snow and a fireplace. Looks like I will have to pick up a can of flock and a space heater... and I am good to go.

It is a really strange feeling remembering thinking about what your life will be like in the future... and then realize it is happening. It is a happy thing... or at least it has me smiling.

Odd

There was no traffic today... none. So very strange. I got to work in about 15 minutes. Everyone must already be leaving town for the holidays.

Rain

Rain is just water. People here run around like it is acid falling from the sky. If you get wet, you dry off. Can we please stop the foolish darting from shelter to shelter in spike heels with a cup of boiling coffee in one hand sloshing about and a file folder over our heads? I am the sure the third degree burns from the coffee or ruining your boss' file is a much more important focus. Walk in a straight line like a sober person, walk a bit faster than normal, avoid large puddles, and look out for other people. Otherwise, you will be laying on your back in a puddle of rain water wondering if the warm sensation you feel is blood gushing from some part of your body, the warm coffee that you are now wearing, or if you have wet yourself.

The Next Second

Is it just me or is the month of December disappearing at a rapid rate? It is less than a week away from Christmas. The last thing that I remember is the turkey coming out of the oven for Thanksgiving. I know I am going to wake up tomorrow and it is going to be New Year's Eve.

Stopped by my old job today. I miss those people; they were just so very fun. Cannot say that I miss the place though. I am happy about the way things have turned out... not anything that I planned, but I love it just the same.

Life is good, right now.

Ctrl + Z

If you have spent a good amount of time behind a computer... you will know what I am talking about... and for the rest of you. The Undo Factor: n. Prolonged computer use such that causes one to think of keyboard shortcuts as a natural reaction to non-computer related events.

It was another exciting morning on the freeways... sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Nineteen miles at 60 mile per hour... that would put me to work in about 20 minutes. Nineteen miles at zero miles per hour; well, that get me to work in a hour. I cannot explain how the math work, but that is Orange County traffic.

My ride to work is guided by the radio every morning. Why? I have options. I could take the 91-East to the 57-South to the 5-South to the 55-South; or I could take the 91-West to the 5-South to the 55-South, or I could take the 91-East to the 55-South, or I could take the 91-East to the 57-South to the 22-East to the 55-South, or I could take three days to get to work and take surface streets (aka the non-freeway method).

So the radio... it picks the route I take to work. If there is an accident on the 57-South, I am not taking it... that simple. Usually. As you know, I share the road with three million other people trying to get to work as well... or school... or whereever. These other people enjoy running into one another... especially in the rain. They just love it. How do I know? The radio... there are at least five accidents every morning... and that is just on the roads that I use to get to work... actually, that is just on the sections of the roads that I use. That many... they have to like it... why else would they do it?

The route I chose today: 91-East to the 57-South to the 5-South to the 55-South. Two feet after I passed the on-ramp to the 22-East the guy on the radio announces a lovely three car pile-up of crash happy people on the 5-South... just before the 55-South exit. First think I think, ctrl+z back two feet and get on the 22-East. The "real" world working the way it does... I was now four feet passed the on-ramp... and ctrl+z does not work.

So it took me a hour to get to work. I saw three stalled cars, two accidents, and an ugly jogger with no shirt.

And I am insane because I still love Orange County.

Slow Season

It is the slow season here at work. The entire media (print, web, video) industry takes a nap during the winter months. It is a nice time to catch up on filing and backup... and all those other little projects that just never get done. It is nice.

I have taken a new job up in LA. I will be starting full-time in January... and starting part-time tonight. I will be putting in a few long days this week... I have estimated that I will be awake for 22 hours today... the same tomorrow... and maybe the next day. My posts may be few... and may be insanity.

I have been putting a lot of work/reading into getting my servers running. The good news is that they are just about there. DNS services are just about running... virtual hosting is the next step... and tada... web servers. Also, just got server number three running... just have to put it on the network. The plan is also to be using FJ's and LM's servers... which will create maximum up time... and a lot of space.

I hope to get all my web design projects completed by the end of January, since I will be starting a new job... and finally, be starting school. The list of projects is still long. Scary times.

Freelance working is going to be coming to an almost stop in the new year. My plan is to avoid freelance work and focus on my new life, job, and school. If I am going to be working on anything... I will be writing. I have a few movie script ideas that I need to get out of my head and onto paper. I also have a few non-fiction book ideas that need to be outlined. I plan on taking these projects at a very slow pace.

My life is just crazy right now. I never imaged myself in this predicament. It is all good... just very different than I had imagined. Life is just an odd thing... keeps you on your toes.

Crazy Food

Last night, we went to dinner at a place called Amazon. It was a Brazilian buffet. The interior design of the place was just plain awesome. Everything, but the meats was buffet style (all you can eat). The meats, they brought to the table on a large skewer and sliced off as much as you would like. It was an unique experience to say the least... and I gained a new liking for Alligator meat.

Lazy Days

I love lazy Saturdays. It is just good to do nothing.

More Bionicle

Looks like I am not alone in my Bionicle craze. Bionicle has won toy of the year... and the movie is due out on DVD in September of 2003.

The Boring Internet

There is so much out there and the web... and still I am able to get bored. It boggles me a bit. More information and cool stuff than I could ever go through... and I am bored. Makes me glad that the "real world" still exists.

Learning

Thanks to FJ for finding this site. It is a very good set of lessons for learning a lot of different web-based technologies. I have had a strong interest in learning XML... now I have a place to do it. Also might be looking into trying XMLspy. Looks like a nifty little application.

Who I Am

My new portfolio site is coming. I am going to gather all my work... print, video, web, art, and photography... and it shall be posted.

B I O N I C L E

I am addicted. Bionicle.com. There are a bunch of movies, stories, and even a history. Lego has real done something cool this time. I cannot wait until the movie comes out.

Yes, I am 24 and I like Legos. Heh. I only have one at this point, Pohatu.

Good Monday

Doesn't that sound like a movie title? Anyway... it is Monday. The day that everyone is tired. It seems to me that it should be the day that we are all rested... but oddly, after a weekend of resting and having fun, we are more tired than on Friday.

I have my coffee in hand and I am making the best of this overcast and chilly Monday.

Something To Say

I did not blog yesterday. I wanted to. I had something to say. I just did not have the time. This lack of time thing has to stop. It does not take even ten minutes to post something.

Zwan, Norman, and the Christmas Tree

I am a proud father of two little plants, Zwan and Norman. They are my new office buddies... at least until they die like all office plants do.

We also brought home this big tree.

Still Ill

The cold took a turn for the worst last night. I am still heading off to work, but I am sure that it will not take them long to send me home. The flood gates have been opened in my head... which makes it hard to read a monitor. Ickers.

December 03, 2002

New, new, and new.

Just posted a new desktop at LoungePunk.com. A blog is finally relocated to its new home at HumbleLucy.com. Pretty soon you might be seeing "Merc has a posse." all over the place.

Oatmeal

Feeling much better today. It is nice to be able to swallow once again.

Looks like Blogger.com is going to be getting a facelift soon. It is always nice to see something new, but the current design works quite nicely.

I am getting out of bed a half-hour earlier. Was not too difficult this morning... I am sure that is because I was sleeping by 8.30a. The extra time is nice. I get to blog... and eat breakfast.

Sickly

I am home ill. Not fun, but oddly relaxing. I am just glad to be ill after the holiday... instead of on the holiday. Three weeks until Christmas... scary, huh?
